Using International or foreign IDs for a US mailbox application

You may use your passport as a photo ID when applying for a U.S. mailbox. However, please note that at least one additional ID must confirm your address, as required in Sections 4f and 9b of USPS Form 1583.

Acceptable Proof of Address Documents

The following documents are acceptable for address verification:

  • Current lease, mortgage, or deed of trust

  • Home or vehicle insurance policy

  • Vehicle registration card

  • Voter registration card

Foreign-Language Documents

If your identification documents are issued in a foreign language, a certified translation must be provided. Exceptions apply only if:

  • The issuing country is the applicant’s country of origin, or

  • The mailbox location has confirmed the ability to interpret the document.
